Development of Sustainability at Bayer

2018 - 2020

  • 2020: Publication of a separate Sustainability Report providing insight into the sustainable development strategy and activities.
  • 2020: Nonfinancial statement pursuant to the CSR Directive Implementation Act integrated into the combined management report of the 2019 Annual Report.
  • 2019: Bayer establishes higher standards for transparency, sustainability and the way we engage with our stakeholders.
  • 2019: Publication of the new sustainability strategy, which is valid from 2020 onwards:
    • 2030 target to be carbon neutral in own operations
    • Ambitious 2030 objectives for access to health and nutrition in low- and middle-income countries and underserved communities
    • Measurable sustainability targets to be incorporated into management compensation
  • 2019: Sustainability becomes even stronger part of corporate strategy
  • 2018: Annual report
    • First-time application of the new GRI Standards in the Annual Report
    • Integration of data pertaining to the newly acquired agriculture business (Monsanto) since the closing on June 7, 2018
  • 2018: Reviewing our key areas of activity as part of a comprehensive materiality analysis 
  • 2018: Early completion of the Group targets for 2020, including target attainment through year end 2018, as the figures had been established prior to the acquisition of the agriculture business (Monsanto). Preparation of new Group targets in 2019. 
  • 2018: Publication of the Supplier Sustainability Guidance for the operative implementation of our Code of Conduct
  • CDP Ratings: Publication of the Climate Assessment A and Water Assessment A for the 2017 fiscal year

2015 - 2017

  • Annual reporting:
    • 2017: First-time inclusion of the provisions of the CSR Directive Implementation Act (CSR-RUG/adopted in the German Commercial Code, sections 289b ff. for the individual company and 315b ff. for the Group)
    • 2016: First-time application of the new G4 guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)
  • 2017: Transparency initiative: access to safety-relevant information about our crop protection products. Summaries of study results and evaluations, as well as the first complete reports on safety studies not intended for commercial use, are available upon request at
  • 2016: Review of Bayer’s key areas of activity from the last materiality analysis (2014) and assessment of their relevance with regard to the reorganization of the Group (divestment of Covestro).
  • 2016: Establishment of a new corporate function: Health, Safety and Sustainability

  • The Group Responsible Marketing & Sales Policy and specific compliance manuals for the HealthCare business are adopted.

  • The Anti-Corruption Procedure is updated and tightened.
  • Bayer implements the CSO (Chief Sustainable Officer) function on the Board of Management.

  • Bayer expands its supplier management, co-founding the “Together for Sustainability” initiative and becoming a member of the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative (PSCI).

  • 2007: Bayer adopts positions on the themes of human rights, biomonitoring, the responsible use of gene technology and nanotechnology.
  • 2006: The Bayer Sustainable Development Policy is adopted.
  • 2005: Systematic initiatives to reduce child labor in India are launched.
  • 2004: Sustainability committees are organizationally established in the Group.
  • 2003: Bayer becomes an organizational stakeholder in the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).
  • 2003: Bayer defines key performance indicators for health, safety and the environment (HSE)
  • 2000: Bayer is a founding member of the UN Global Compact.
